This Is - old news

For the faithful few you may recall that last October I posted about my Halloween Costume "old news" when inspired by Project Runway I made my own outfit out of newspaper. Now it turns out I may have inspired Project Runway.

This weeks mission on PR was for them to make an outfit out of Newspaper! I watched as they struggled with some of the same issued me and my assistant (Brianna) had as we made our dress. They came up with some fantastic looks, but I was still pretty proud of the dress Brianna and I put together.

The contestants had many things to their advantage. First and Foremost they are designers, I took a sewing class when I was 10 or 11. They had forms to build their outfits on and adequate workspace, I had my kitchen floor. They had sewing machines I had packaging tape. They had rolls of newsprint if they wanted, I had old Good Times or Growing Up in Santa Cruz papers.

With all that in mind I think Brianna and I could have totally held our own. We rocked it out in the same time frame, we also completed a belt and a hand bag.

Breaking all the Rules

I drive the same road almost everyday and each time I pass the sign that says please call to report drunk drivers I think..."hummm, if I were to call 911 to report the drunk driver would I not also be breaking the law?"

I live in CA (in case you were unaware) and in my state it is now illegal to talk on your phone while driving unless you have a hands free deal. Which I do not have. I did have one but it never ever called the person I wanted to talk to, in fact sometimes it would dial random numbers for people I did not even know. I spent more time trying to push the buttons on the "hands free" device then I ever do on my phone. Not to mention that my "hands free" device was to be attached to the sun visor of my car, so when I had to look at it to figure out who it was calling or what button to poke I had to look up. It was really more of an "eyes free" of the road device and thus really really not a wise solution to the whole no cell phone law. Did I mention how utterly stupid the people on the road look when I glance over and see them yammering on and on to themselves? (yes I know they are talking to someone somewhere, but it looks like they have issues.) It really looks funny when they are passionate about whatever it is that they are yelling about.

Back to the road sign...so while I am in agreement that no one should drive drunk, it is ridiculous to assume that I am going to break the law when I know that once I reach the operator they ask, "could you tell me what street you are at?"

"No, no I cannot, because if I do then you will be here to not only arrest the drunk driving in front of me but give me a ticket as well."

Speaking of tickets, I have noticed that most people in CA choose not to obey the no cell phone law, either because they don't think they will be caught or they have done the math and figured they will just pay the stupid ticket when they do.

So my solution to this (though I am not really suggesting that we adopt it as I too am a CA who tends to not obey the law) is ...Instead of giving a ticket take the bloody cell phone away and hold it for 72 hours at which point the perpetrator can go down to the local office and recover their property after paying a fine. I am telling you this would put a stop to the driving while calling situation.

A. No one wants their cell phone to be out of their possession for 72 hours.
B. You do this with kids and it works. They break a rule you take their stuff away, they get mad, but you win.
C. You are now not able to work anywhere you like for 72 hours, for many their phone is much more than just a phone at this point.
D. It is inconvinent to have to go pick it up
E. There is the fee still.
F. That is more than enough reasons

Friends on a side note if you have not tried option B with your kids and you have kids I highly recommend it. I myself have no kids!!! But I have taken care of thousands, and I was once upon a time a child...Option B works.

A Completely Random Example With No Bearing on My Life ;)

If your kids have drums, and you tell them not to bang on them and yet they continue to do so. Take the sticks away. Or the drums. Or both. I guarantee if you take both you will not have to listen to the pounding.
Of Course you could like the police should do give them back after 72 hours and a fee. You may be thinking..."Trinity my kids do not have money, or any money they do have was mine to begin with." Good point. But trust me there are many other ways that you can have them earn their belongings back. Like say, vacuuming, dusting, taking the dog for a run, leaving you alone for an hour.
